13th Jan 2002 - A Happy New Year for B's as they beat East Grinstead!
Beccehamians recorded their first win of the season with a 20-5 victory over East Grinstead at Sparrow's Den last Sunday. Scoring two tries in each half, the game saw a marked improvement in performance from the Beccehamians, able to pick a full-strength side for the first time this season. A solid forward performance which got stronger as the game wore on was backed up by some slick handling in the three-quarters. Play went through several phases on many occasions, particularly in the build-up to the third try scored ten minutes after half-time.
East Grinstead who were short of a couple of players and reinforced by two Beccehamian girls, were never able to get any fluency into their game and were harried constantly by the Beccs defenders and rucked off their own ball on numerous occasions. They scored their only try of the game going blind from a scrum in Beccs' twenty-two, but never kept the ball long enough to threaten further scores.
First-half tries by fly-half Louise Thomas and Shannon Fisher, who had a strong game at inside centre, settled understandable nerves for Beccs who struggled in the set-piece early in the game. In the second-half they doubled their score, Louise Thomas grabbing another try from a sustained period of pressure, and scrum-half Harriet Bold sealing the win by picking up a loose ball on half-way and running in unopposed to dot-down under the posts.
At the final whistle the relief felt by Beccs players at their first win was obvious. The improvement shown over the first half of the season bodes well for the next half and they'll be looking to build on their progress in their next game at home against Thanet Wanderers on Sunday 17th February.
