17th March 2002 - Beccehamian Ladies WIN 10-20 away to Ashford
Beccs Ladies overcame Ashford this Sunday to record their second win of the season, four tries to two. Missing three players on duty with the South-East U18's this weekend, the Beccs were only able to field a team of 12. Luckily Ashford were in the same position and so a meaningful encounter could still take place. Playing with only a tight-five in the scrums, this meant some rearranging for Beccs who had to play a few players out of position. Jules May stepped in at fly-half from her normal position on the flank, with fly-half Lou Thomas moving to scrum-half. Kelly Malynn moved from No 8 to second row with the other back row players moving out into the backs.
Beccehamians were slow in starting the match with some initial confusion due to the changes in positions. Ashford were quick to take advantage, and were able to run in a try within the first five minutes.
Beccs re-grouped and began to compete for the ball with some good rucking and quick ball out to the wings. Increased pressure saw Beccs move up into the Ashford half and after a quick tap penalty, Lou Thomas captured the first score for Beccs, being tackled inches from the line but just managing at full stretch to touch-down.
Gaining in confidence, the Beccs girls began to run the ball around more in an attempt to avoid the big Ashford forwards. Lock forward Sarah Henson finished off a move on the wing to go over the line for her first try for the club.
Half-time saw Ashford fired up and ready to fight-back. Some sustained pressure from their forwards meant the Beccs girls had to bed down and work hard to keep them back. Plagued by a number of knock-ons, Beccs had work hard to win back the ball. They began to put in some good tackles and moved back up into Ashford territory. Stamping some authority on the match, Lou Thomas managed a great move in midfield which saw her dodge through the Ashford line to go over for her second try of the day.
Ashford weren't beaten yet though and came back at Beccs strongly. Some increased pressure and good passing soon saw them crossing the line to record their second try of the match.
Beccehamians again re-grouped. The Ashford forwards were still ready to go and a number of scrums in the Beccs twenty-two severely tested the Beccs defence. Twice the Ashford forwards managed to maul the ball over the line but each time were held-up by a great defensive effort from Beccs. Beccs again fought back and cleared their line to play back in the Ashford half. With time running out Beccs put in a final push, with total determination not to lose the match from here. With five minutes to go the ball was again on its way out to the wings where Sarah Henson managed to get on the end of the move to sprint over for her second try of the match. The match finished moments later at Ashford 10 - Beccehamians 20.
This was another big step for the Beccehamians, reward for the hard work that has been put in at training over the last few weeks, with some very welcome help from the Beccehamian men’s coaches and team.
