4th March 2012 - Beccs Ladies do bog snorkelling at home to Canterbury
Beccs Ladies took on Canterbury Ladies at Sparrows Den today on one of the wettest and windiest days of the year.
With rain continuing to hammer down it was always going to be heavy going on the sodden pitch.
This was a tricky game for Beccs as Canterbury couldn't field a full team so the game was reduced to 12-aside. On the
wide Sparrows Den pitches this gave plenty of space for the Canterbury speedy backs to run in. And straight from kick-off
they did, taking full advantage of playing down the slope and with the wind and unfortunately the first quarter was rather
painful for Beccs ladies as Canterbury spread the ball quickly, took advantage of Beccs initial lack of shape, and ran in a number
of often quite easy tries.
Beccs ladies dug deep and began to get more shape on the game, with full-back Helen Pooley doing a great job of organising the
defensive line and fellow backs, Keeta Rowlands, Tania Miles and Naomi Stacia doing a great job in defence.
With the defence now organised, Canterbury were unable to just break through the gaps and so the ball went to ground more often which brought the forwards back into
the game with improved rucking and mauling leading to some turnover ball which the ladies were able to use, making some good
distance into the Canterbury half.
Against a heavy Canterbury pack, the Beccehamian scrum had to work hard to hold their own, but with great work from the front row of
Sam Reynolds, Sarah Abbott and Yvonne Baxter the scrum was pretty stable enabling number eight and captain Rebecca Broadhurst
to set up some good phases of play.
Things improved further in the second half once Beccs ladies had the hill advantage although the weather was still conspiring against
them and the wind was making everyone extremely cold. Canterbury were able to put together some more well-worked tries, again taking
advantage of their two speedy wingers. Beccehamians although being well beaten played with pride and passion and put together some good
lineout play through lock Heather Fulcher and the breakthrough came with a period of play where most of the team touched the ball before
Rebecca Broadhurst was able to crash through and score for Beccs.
More was yet to come as a great piece of individual play from Cherene Dickson saw her nearly cross the line but was able to pass out to
Hannah Sweatman who went over for the try. With time ticking away another great piece of play from Hannah Sweatman saw her run over a couple
of Canterbury players to score her second of the day.
With most ladies unable to feel their fingers from the cold, the game finished 81-15 to Canterbury who were always better suited to playing
12-aside rugby but it was pleasing to see Beccs Ladies rally and never give up and finish the game with three great tries.
