26th February 2012 - Beccs Ladies show courage against Medway Ladies

Beccs Ladies travelled to Borstal this Sunday to take on Medway Ladies at their Priestfields Ground. With the sun shining and the ground firm you didn't have to be a nutter to realise it was a perfect day for a game of rugby.

Beccs got off to an unsteady start letting Medway in for a quick score almost straight from the kick off. At this point it looked like it might be a long afternoon but it this was not to be the case with both sides playing some good rugby. Beccs were dominant in the scrum and put together some good pushes resulting in a couple of scrums against the head. The forwards were also able to use their power in the early mauls with some good resulting ball.

The breakthrough came with good hands through the back-line and quick ball out to winger Caroline Dieleman who galloped in for Beccehamians first try. The conversion by Cherene Dickson missed by mere inches bringing the ladies back level with Medway.

Beccehamians dug in again and some quick ball from srum-half Claire Oldham and good distribution from fly-half Hannah Sweatman saw the ladies making some good forays into the Medway twenty-two but were foiled each time in getting to the line. Good rucking from the forwards saw the ball retention improve and Beccs were unlucky not to score and a few mistakes enabled Medway to scramble through the defence to score and convert taking the half-time score to 12-5.

After a really good performance in the first half, Beccehamians went through a purple patch for the first part of the second half. The Medway defence were able to put Beccs under some pressure and this resulted in a few moments of panic with mistakes being made which Medway were able to capitalise on. Special mentions go to Hannah Sweatman who continued to organise the back-line admirably whilst trying to get some forward direction. Captain Rebecca Broadhurst led from the front in the forwards with good direct running and front-rowers Yvonne Baxter and Sarah Abbott were tireless in trying to turn-over the ball from Medway.

After a period in which Medway scored a number of tries and Beccehamians heads went down for a bit, the ladies rallied and finished the game with some encouraging play where they remembered to retain and present the ball in contact. Putting into play the drills they have been doing in training, the ladies scored their last try in the final minute of the game with a piece of set play from a penalty around 40-metres out. Scrum-half Claire Oldham set the ball out to fly-half Hannah Sweatman who took on the Medway defender in text-book style allowing Rebecca Broadhurst to storm through the Medway defence and score under the posts. The conversion was taken successfully by Cherene Dickson meaning that the ladies finished on a high.

The game finished 39-12 to Medway but the scoreline by no means tells the whole story. For large periods of this game, Beccehamian ladies held their own and competed on a level with Medway Ladies. Some of the rugby played was exceptional but there were contrasting periods which let the ladies down. But this was a gutsy performance and proof that the hard work in training is paying off for the ladies.

Beccs Ladies next match takes place on Sunday 4th March at home to Canterbury Ladies - please come and support us!
