11th March 2012 - Beccs Ladies win big at home to Lewes
Beccs Ladies played at home today and after the rain of last week the sun came out for this game and the
ladies were able to play some good rugby and finally get some payback for their hard work in training.
The ladies set out with some consistent and aggressive play which enabled them to win the ball in the rucks
and put pressure on the Lewes back line. This led to Beccs first try which was from fly-half Hannah Sweatman who
forced the error from the Lewes defence and was able to take advantage. The try was converted by Cherene Dickson.
With heads held high, the ladies dug in deep again and with continued pressure put more panic into the Lewes defensive
line and some great looping and good hands from the backs gave the space Beccs needed and enabled Hannah Sweatman to gallop over for
a second try.
Not to be outdone by the backs, the forwards put in some hard work in the close play and the third try came as a result
of a big scrum which Beccs won against the head. It was taken blind by Captain Rebecca Broadhurst who was then supported by the
rest of her pack in a quick rolling mall. Becca was then able to break off again just before the maul was pushed into touch and
with quick hands go the ball quickly away to Hannah Sweatman who got her hatrick before half time. This was again converted by Cherene
Dickson bringing the half-time score to 19-0.
The second half went much the same way as the first with some great hands from Sarah Abbott taking the high balls extremely well and enabling
Beccs to secure possession away from the Lewes pack. Backed up well by the Beccs pack, Sam Reynolds getting stuck in particularly well
in the rucks and mauls. The whole team were committed to their tackles and supported each other well and despite letting Lewes in for a couple of
tried, the good positioning in both defence and attack meant that turn-over ball could be used to great effect and was soon turned into attack.
Beccs scored another three tries in the second half with one from Captain Rebecca Broadhurst and another two from Hannah Sweatman, one of which
she converted herself taking Beccs total tally up to six tries on the day and a final score of 38-15. Well worth the celebratory jug from coach
Kelly Malynn!
This was a much improved result from Beccs Ladies and a complete team effort proving that working together really does make sense. The defensive
lines were in place and much more solid and this meant that the attacking lines were more effective when the Ladies got possession.
Beccs Ladies next match takes place on Sunday 25th March at home to Chelmsford Ladies - please come and support us!
