1st November 2009 - Beccs Ladies win 10-24 away to Footscray
Many thanks to Match Report Author GIANT HAYSTACKS for this account of the match.
The ladies travelled away this Sunday for a league match against close neighbours Footscray.
As Footscray players were thin on the ground the match was played 12-a-side.
The match started well for the ladies with an excellent break by Katie Lunnon just minutes after kick-off.
However Katie was brought down on the five-yard line by the Footscray winger, sustaining a leg injury in
the process which forced her to the sideline for the remainder of the match. The scrum which followed
resulted in Captain Amy Wigley bulldozing her way over in the corner to draw first blood to go 0-5.
Twenty minutes after the first try and following some great runs from the backs and some big hits from
the forwards, Beccs got their second try of the game after an astounding run from near-on the half-way
line by Charlie Emuss who grounded the ball by the posts. Karen Harrison-Phipps relished the opportunity
of being right in front of the uprights and converted convincingly. HALF TIME 0-12
Kick-off of the second half saw the official match report note-taker (Tucker) suffer a rather unfortunate
lager malfunction. This combined with the fact that most of the spectators were pre-occupied with the words
of wisdom spewing forth from Abb's mouth, saw very little information recorded. That is until the 15th minute
when the Referee awarded a slightly spurious try to Footscray which fortunately went unconverted taking the score to
5-12.
Beccs reply to this came in the form of Hannah Sweatman who made a great run (avoiding the dead ball line)
and grounded to make the score 5-17. Play resumed after a brief acrobatic display from Zippo's circus and ten minutes later Footscray scored their
second try of the game taking the score to 10-17. Five minutes later Hannah Sweatman made another great run
and made her brace of tries scoring between the posts (albeit with a slightly toned down celebration this time) and
this was converted by Sally Gordon.
The final ten minutes of the match saw Debbie Hutchings come on for Beccs to make a welcome return
and made a couple of hits so big that the recipients would still be writhing on the pitch a week later.
Hannah Sweatman finished her game with a last ditch try-saving tackle which unfortunately saw her
break a nail. We all hope she'll be fit to play against Medway.
FULL TIME SCORE 10-24
Throughout the course of the match the backs showed some great support work and made some
brilliant runs into space. The forwards grafted excellently in the un-set scrums and won
plenty of ball.
