22nd November 2009 - Beccs Ladies lose 22-15 away to Medway.
Many thanks to Match Report Author GIANT HAYSTACKS for this account of the match.
It was sunny for approximately two whole hours on Sunday and fortunately it was within these
two hours that the match was played. Unfortunately it was still very cold and ridiculously windy and
the ladies began the match with both the sun and wind behind them.
After a scrappy first five minutes from both teams, Beccs piled on the pressure forcing Medway
to give away two penalties in the first twenty minutes. Rebecca Broadhurst took the second of
these on Medway's 22' and carried the ball into contact. Amy Wigley picked up the ball from
the back of the ruck and bludgeoned her way over near the corner to take Beccs to a 5-0 lead.
Three minutes after their first try, Rebecca Broadhurst cleared the ball from the ground with a kick
through and gave chase from the half-way line. Great kicking from Rebecca combined with excellent
support saw Jay Sperry ground the ball as it tumbled over the line.
Twenty-seven minutes into the half Medway were awarded a penalty on the Beccs 22' and following
some gritty forwards play they scored their first try of the match. Shortly before half-time they
managed to cross for a second try which was converted taking the half-time score to 12-10 to Medway.
Thoughts from the touchline;
- What message was P'Nut trying to signal to Whippet via the medium of semaphore?
- Would the Referee be any good at playing pinball?
- Why are my feet so cold?
The start of the second half saw Karen Harrison-Phipps come on for Caz Waugh. Eight minutes
in, Medway took a penalty from just inside the Beccs 22' and drove over the line. Excellent
defensive work from Hayley Brennan saw the ball held-up and no try awarded. Ten minutes later
Medway were awarded yet another penalty inside Beccs 22' which they took quickly before Beccs
had re-grouped. A try in the corner was narrowly saved by extreme pressure from Amy Wigley
which saw Medway drop the ball over the line and knock it on. Five minutes later however
Medway did manage to score their third try.
Throughout the course of the second half both teams sustained a number of injuries with Medway
ending up looking the worse for wear and finally going down to thirteen players. Five minutes
later Beccs were awarded a penalty just outside their own 22' which Captain Amy took quickly
and ran with all the way to the posts to take the score to 17-15.
Medway responded quickly and scored once more before the final whistle in a half which had an
amazing amout of injury time and lasted nearly an hour!
FULL-TIME 22-15
Special Note: It was noted in the clubhouse after the match that Claire Oldham is a
very nice person,as she bought a woolly hat and more importantly some snowmen rugby
socks for Haystacks, so no more cold feet on the touch-line. Thanks.
GIANT HAYSTACKS.
