25th October 2009 - Beccs Ladies lose 28-5 away to Worthing
Many thanks to Match Report Author GIANT HAYSTACKS for this account of the match.
Beccs ladies were supposed to play Tonbridge Juddians in the league this weekend, however TJ's pulled out of the
match late on in the week. As Beccs were ready and eager to play they had a quick phone around and re-arranged
their away game with Worthing from the 8th November to this weekend.
Worthing kicked off the first half and for the first fourteen minutes stayed in the Beccs half
resulting in a converted try at the 14th minute. 7-0
After the restart Beccs took the game to Worthing in their own half and remained there until
half-time. This constant pressure resulted in two narrowly missed opportunities for Beccs.
At the 25th minute Vonnie Baxter side-stepped one player and off-loaded out of contact to
Jay Sperry who then found Claire Oldham in space. Claire shipped the ball to Helen Pooley inches short
of the line, who looked to have crossed in to score in the corner. Unfortunately as the ball
was grounded Helens foot slipped into touch.
In the 34th minute it looked like the score would be evened when Hannah Sweatman, making her Beccs
debut, sidestepped four of the opposition and crossed the line. Once across Hannah made
for the posts (mostly due to shouted instructions from the Beccs supporters) however due
to pressure from Worthing she ran the ball dead. HALF TIME 7-0
The second half started badly for Beccs with a try to Worthing coming five minutes after
the start of the half, and then another one ten minutes later. Both were converted, taking
the score to 21-0. Twenty minutes into the half it looked like they would put another
one past the ladies when their Number 10 broke through with a clear run to the line. However
under excellent pressure from Katie Lunnon who was going to catch her, their fly-half panicked
and chipped ahead with more force than necessary and the ball went dead.
Beccs made substitutions (once the subs had turned up) 22 minutes into the second half.
Sally Gordon and Tash Williams came on, Mandy Talbot and Neile Meecham came off, and Coach Kelly Malynn
played musical players with most of the backs.
Worthing scored another converted try 29 minutes into the second half to put the score to 28-0.
Four minutes later Jess Sweatman retired from the match with an injured leg, and had a little
lay-down on the touch-line, thus bringing Neile back on for the remainder of the match.
Despite the score-line, Beccs didn't lose heart, and managed to end the match on their own
terms with a last minute try from Amy Wigley which sadly went un-converted.
FULL TIME 28-5
It must be noted that throughout the course of the match, the Forwards dominated
against a physically superior opposition, losing only two scrums and winning every line-out.
The Backs were also outweighed by their opposite numbers, and countered this with some terrific
tackling, including a few two-person tackles (without knocking each other unconcious).
The one let-down was the Beccs supporting touch-judge who from now on shall be demoted to
water-boy.
GIANT HAYSTACKS.
A big welcome to Hannah Sweatman who made her first appearance for Beccs, and a big commiseration to Lizzie D'Angelo
who has had her ankle pinned after a bad break in training on Thursday evening.
Beccs Ladies next match takes place on Sunday 1st November AWAY to Footscray Ladies - please come and support us!
