18th Sep 2005 - Beccs lose 5-25 against Canterbury

After a long delay to kick-off due to Canterbury arriving late, Beccs ladies got the season off to a slow and sluggish start which the Canterbury backs seized with delight to score two quick tries in the first ten minutes.

Settling down, Beccs ladies began to pull together with some good driving from the forwards enabling the new centre partnership of Beckie Edney and Sarah Le Prevost to put together some good moves. With quicker ball from the rucks and much more pressure on the Canterbury back-line, Beccs pushed Canterbury back into their own half and spent the next twenty-odd minutes hovering over or near to the try line. However the ladies couldn't quite find the winning combination to take them through the Canterbury defence and it was heart-breaking to see Canterbury capitalise on a Beccs mistake to run in a long-distance try just before half-time.

With the Beccs spirit never broken the ladies fought back in the second half in what was a tough contest. The breakthrough came for Beccs from Beckie Edney who managed a trade-mark run through mid-field to score. (A second identical run later on was judged to have been knocked on as the ball was grounded!)

With no subs available the forwards worked hard and who put in some great mauls, driving through the Canterbury defence. Some explosive bursts from flanker Tracey Roper nearly got Beccs more points but twice she was held up over the line. Flanker Lara Fisher was also held up over the line after a great rip which turned into a maul.

It was not to be Beccs day and Canterbury fought hard to secure ball and get back into the Beccs 22. Winger Cleo Bingham (playing her first League match for Beccs) made a great try saving tackle on the right wing but Canterbury managed another two tries in the second half to take the match 25-5.

This was a disppointing match for Beccs Ladies who managed to secure much of the possession but just couldn't create enough to get over the try line. Congratulations to Canterbury and we look forward to the return match.

Our next League match is AWAY to Aylesford on Sunday 25th September.
