30th Oct 2005 - Beccs lose 22-0 away to Beckenham

Beccehamian Ladies took on their local rivals Beckenham in a Division 3 SE-E match this Sunday at Balmoral Avenue. In a tough match they were put under immediate pressure from the Beckenham back-line which had the defence working at full pelt. With some initial confusion due to a number of ladies playing out of position, the first 10 minutes were messy and it took a while for Beccs to get some cohesion.

Katie Gosling made good use of the wind to kick some territory and to relieve the Beccs line however it was Beckenham who eventually triumphed with some good work from their forwards to score the first try of the match. Beccs dug in deep responding well and some good work was carried out by Beccs forwards to get the ball out to the back line. Beckie Edney playing out on the wing had a couple of good runs and on the opposite wing Rebecca Crawford playing her first game for Beccs also had some good play - slightly different to her normal position of flanker! Claire Hamon, playing at full-back for the first time did some good tackles to stop Beckenham advancing and worked hard all afternoon covering the ground whilst Vice Captain Claire Carver played a blinder in centre with some massive tackles. Despite the hard work Beccs were unable to score going into half-time 5-0 down.

Playing against the wind in the second half was much harder work and with Katie Gosling off the pitch it became harder to clear the lines and much of this half was played camped out in the Beccs twenty-two. Great work in the break-down from Vonnie Baxter and the rest of the pack saw some greater ball retention but Beccs simply couldn't break through to gain a score. One magic moment was a Beckenham scrum on the Beccs 5-metre line which was taken against the head by Vonnie Baxter to clear the lines. However it was a game without too much magic from the Beccehamian team and Beckenham were able to breach the lines 3 more times through their back-line to leave the final score 22-0.

Plenty to work on at training for Beccehamians but some encouraging signs not to mention a fantastic first ever rugby game for Victoria Welch stopping the Beckenham line quite a few times out wide, and a good first match for Beccs for Neile Meecham. Thanks to Beckenham for a competitive game played in good spirit and we look forward to the return match.

Our next League match is HOME to Old Cats on Sunday 6th November.
