25th Sep 2005 - Beccs lose 49-5 away to Aylesford

On Sunday 26 September Beccs ladies played their second league game of the season away to Aylesford. A disappointing loss showed some areas for improvement but also some encouraging areas of strength within the ladies team. Unfortunately one of these wasn’t numbers! and a disappointingly poor turnout ended with Beccs borrowing 4 willing Aylesford ladies to make up a full 15 for a good game allowing everyone to have a run around.

In the first ten minutes of the match some fast moves and breaks by the Aylesford ladies led to a couple of quick tries whilst Beccs were still settling into the game (taking too long to get their heads on) although the new additions to the team didn’t really help teamwork. However, once they had found their feet, the Beccs pack pulled out all the stops, working hard to compete in the scrums, and using some good rolling mauls to dominate possession and take play into the Aylesford half. The majority of play was in Aylesfords’ 22 but unfortunately Aylesfords’ backs were defending well, moving up quickly to prevent Beccs spreading the play in an attempt to even the scores.

The Beccs forward dominance bought its reward shortly before half time though as a scrum near the Aylesford 22 allowed scrum-half Louise Dennis the time to break down the blind side, dodging three attempted tackles to score Beccs only points of the game.

Spurred on by the late score, Beccs continued to press after halftime in an attempt to pull level but despite some big hits from the forwards and some incisive breaks from the backs, Beccs could never quite make their possession count again. Poor support play saw some moves founder, but in general Beccs kept possession and recycled the ball well. In defence Beccs worked hard, and the tries Aylesford posted were due in main to some well worked breaks and overlaps, although the Beccs team never gave up and continued to defend despite the mounting score-line.

Our next League match is AWAY to Footscray on Sunday 9th October.
