9th Sep 2007 - Beccs Ladies play Old Elthamians in pre-season friendly
Beccehamians got their season off to an eagerly anticipated start with a friendly against local team Old Elthamians.
Having been let down by two other teams during the week beforehand, Old E's stepped in at the last minute to give the ladies a game.
Both teams had a difficult 06/07 season where they struggled for numbers and so were both keen to get the season off to a
positive start.
Beccehamians put in a great team performance, working together to create many try-scoring opportunities. With a
team composed almost entirely of forwards, Beccs were unsurprisingly unable to completely match the speed and agility of
Old Elthamians’ agile backs.
However Old E’s were missing key positions in the forwards which meant that Beccs Ladies were able to dominate up front.
Despite having players out of position and forwards out in the backs(!) Beccs ladies worked well as a team, with every player
giving 110%. Elthamians were forced to rely much more on the speed and kicking ability of some key players to score
several breakaway tries. It was a close and exciting game where Beccs only narrowly missed out on victory with the visitors
creating a break-away from inside their own half to score in the penultimate minute of the game.
Forwards Natasha Williams and Hayley Brennen scored their first ever tries, whilst Debbie Hutchings and Vonnie Baxter both put in a great
effort to score two apiece. Another try from Claire Carver put the points tally at 35 with Debbie Hutchings converting
2 to make the final score 39-41 to Old E's.
Our next match is our first League match in Di 2 SE-E which is AWAY to HERTFORD on Sunday 23rd September.
