23rd Sep 2007 - Beccs Ladies lose away in first League match at Hertford
Beccs Ladies had a tough first match away today at Hertford Ladies - a team the ladies had never met before and knew very little about. Unfortunately Beccs
were still sunning themselves on the beaches in the first twenty minutes and seemed to forget the basics of playing in a competitive rugby match.
Hertford were quick to take advantage running in four tries in the first 10 minutes. Beccs ladies were slightly shell-shocked by this quick onslaught and it took a while for
the ladies to get their heads back together and begin to play some cohesive and positive rugby. With 18 ladies travelling to Hertford, they were able to tinker with the team
with some ladies playing both in the backs and forwards, however it was all Hertford in the first half when at the break Beccs were able to re-group and begin again.
Playing into the wind in the second half the ladies began to play much better, with some great scrums, a couple against the head for Vonnie Baxter, one in particular metres from Beccs lines.
The backs played admirably all day, chasing down the Hertford centres who took good advantage of the slightly disorganised Beccs defensive line. Great running by Jo Higgins and full-back Claire Hamon managed to stop some of these runs, whilst scrum-half Claire Carver scavenged what ball she could despite getting scragged quite a few times!
With better rucking and mauling Beccs finished the match on the ascendancy keeping the second-half score to a mere 15-0 which should encourage the ladies as to what can happen if they play with fire and passion from the first whistle and not waiting for the opposition to run at them at every opportunity.
