18th January 2009 - Beccs Ladies lose 5-39 at home to East Grinstead

After a rocky start with a change of location and an elusive referee, Beccs Ladies began the match solidly despite a six week gap since the last game. An excellent attacking break meant an early score for Beccs Captain Eran Miles who was well-supported by wing Katie Lunnon and outside centre Jay Sperry. East Grinstead retaliated with two tries scored through gaps in the Beccs defence but with both sides working hard defensively the scoreline remained the same until half-time.

Beccs had some good periods of advantage in the first half and the game stayed fluid but they were just unable to break through the East Grinstead defence. Number 8 Amy Pugh showed off some of her excellent moves with a terrific breakaway and run for the posts but it didn’t quite come off and sadly Vice Captain had to leave the pitch with a suspected knee injury.

The second half began with a renewed effort from East Grinstead which led to a couple of scores and despite the shaky restart, Beccs Ladies dug in their heels, defending the line ferociously with some excellent tackles. Full-back Anita Oliver, who was awarded Backs Player of the Match, was in great form putting in some crunching tackles. Communication on the day was good and quick thinking from scrum-half, Claire Oldham, voted Players Player of the Match, meant the ball was kept alive and used well throughout.

Beccs Ladies continued to push forward making the game a challenge for East Grinstead and some great runs by flanker Rebecca Broadhurst, Forward Player of the Match, gained valuable ground.

The final score of 5-39 did not really reflect the continual effort and team work which Beccs Ladies displayed on the pitch, but it was a good match, enjoyed by players and spectators alike and from which Beccs Ladies will continue to develop and build.

Beccs Ladies next match takes place on Sunday 25th January HOME to Medway - please come and support us!
