23rd November 2008 - Beccs Ladies record resounding 47-0 win!
Beccs Ladies finally put all their hard work into action this weekend with a great win against Hastings & Bexhill. With plenty of ladies available it made all the difference especially as Hastings only had 11 players so the teams played 11-aside rugby.
The match got off to a surprising start, for Beccs as much as Hastings with number 8, Amy Pugh scoring a try within the first minute of the match. This quickly set the mood for the first half with tries from Captain Eran Miles, Jay Sperry, Claire Oldham and a conversion from Sally Gordon. Hastings tried time after time to defend their line against the Beccs attack but to no avail as the girls pushed hard for a score-line that reflected all their efforts. In extremely wet and muddy conditions, Beccs were able to put into action the moves they have been practising in training to produce 9 tries on the day.
In the second-half Hastings came back to the pitch with a renewed sense of vigour and Beccs had to spend much of their time defending. Despite some great breaks from their back line, Hastings were unable to penetrate Beccs strong defence for the next 35 minutes, leaving the score-line clean.
The day saw some spectacular performances from all the girls involved but especially from the players of the match. Yvonne Baxter (No. 2) was forward of the match and appeared everywhere on the pitch even assisting on the wing at one point! Claire Oldham (No.9) was back of the match and her strong decision-making and swift movement ensured that much was made of possession and also gained her a first try of the season. And Eran Miles (No. 10), playing her first game as Captain was Player’s Player for her continued efforts throughout the match to push forward and keep the team scoring.
A big Beccs welcome to Julie Hitchings making her debut and playing a great first game and a welcome back to Clare Hamon who played her first game after a year out injured.
