25th January 2009 - Beccs Ladies lose 22-0 away to Worthing
After Medway were unable to field a team on Sunday, Beccs Ladies travelled away to Worthing for a friendly match. The game began in difficult conditions for both sides with persistent rain and a boggy pitch, but in true Beccs style the team greeted the conditions with a combination of resignation and humour. It began fairly evenly with both sides testing the water to see how best to play the match. An early break and good pressure from Beccs meant the game sat solidly in Worthing’s own half but this was a more experienced team than Beccs had played at the beginning of the season and their development showed.
With excellent attacking work, Worthing pushed Beccs back into their own half and it was only due to determination and strong defensive lines that Beccs managed to hold the score board clear for so long. But Worthing used their backline to good effect to create overlap after overlap and eventually pushed over the line to take first points. From that moment Beccs doubled their efforts. Special mention goes to Sarah ‘Abs’ Abbott who was voter Player’s Player for her excellent defensive work throughout the match. Beccs almost held out to half-time but could not hold off a second score from Worthing making the score 10-0 at the break.
The second half began with Worthing scoring early and Beccs chose to make some rather unusual changes in the structure of their. People rose to the challenge and played to the best of their ability in positions they might not normally. Forward of the match went to Sam Howe for an excellent performance at second row demonstrating power in the scrum and some good decision-making in open play. Back of the match was Helen Pooley who despite being the only wing on the field held her own in defence against a relentless Worthing backline.
The match finished with a final score of 22-0, which was slightly disappointing for Beccs but an excellent learning opportunity with ladies playing in unfamiliar positions and learning lost about the game. The score also reflects how far Worthing have come in the short Season they have been playing and we wish them the best of luck joining a league for 2009-10.
