3rd April 2005 - Beccs ladies take part in Cup Tournament at Crawley RFC
Beccs Ladies travelled to Crawley Rugby Club this weekend to take part in the Southern Region new-look Cup Tournament. Twelve teams took part in three pools of four, each team playing three matches of 15 minutes each way. Beccs ladies opposition were Camberley, Oakmedians and Guildford.
Beccs kicked the day off against Camberley who proved to be a very well drilled outfit. Currently top of SE2 and unbeaten all season it was easy to see why! Beccs did their normal trick of lazing around in the sun for too long before rushing a far too short warm-up and only waking up at half-time. Camberley took good advantage and scored most of their points in the first 15 mins. Beccs then awoke from the shock of being smacked as soon as they touched the ball and actually played some very good rugby. (Score 32-0)
After a two match break Beccs then took on Oakmedians, also from SE2. Beccs were more organised for this one and the preparation worked(!) with some good set-piece and scrummaging from Beccs. Oakmedians showed their superior skills in particular ball handling and continuity and managed to break through the gaps. Their superior fitness showed in the second half with Beccs flagging slightly in the sunshine. Losing hooker Laura in the second half when her reconstructed shoulder popped out, Beccs did well to cover the ground they did. (Thanks to the Oakmedians prop for putting it back in for her!) The girls actually played better rugby in this match than against Camberley but playing with just 14 players at the start and then 13 when Laura went off took its toll and Oakmedians simply took advantage. (Score 45-0)
Last match of the day for Beccs kicked off five minutes after the end of the Oakmedians match which simply gave the girls no time to recover. Playing with thirteen players didn't help matters! Not to take anything away from Guildford from SE-W 4 who played with spirit and determination in what was the bargain-basement decider. Beccs played their little hearts out but their fitness levels weren't up to it and tiredness kicked in with the ladies simply making too many mistakes to win. Guildford played some good rugby to take advantage and dominate the match. The moment of the day came with a splendid run from half-way by Sniffer to almost make the line. Carolyn Waugh was on hand to go over for a try and Beccs only points of the day. (Score 20-5)
It was a most enjoyable day in the sunshine, nice to play and see other teams we wouldn't normally. Camberley narrowly beat Oakmedians in the pool table and both go through to the next round. In the final rankings Beccs actually finished bottom with the wooden spoon but at least we scored!!
