31st Oct 2004 - Beccs ladies win 30-0 at home to Beckenham
Beccs Ladies had a stormer this Sunday in a Division 3 SE-E derby match against their nearest rivals Beckenham Ladies. With the forwards putting in some hard work in the loose to secure possession as well as being dominant in the scrum, the backs were able to link together well, obviously putting into practise some of the moves from the training pitch.
First try came early on with flanker Steph Cleough putting in just one of many strong runs through the Beckenham defence. With the backs determined to put their training work to good use newcomer Maureen Hill was able to sprint through for a score along with well-worked ones each for wings Claire Hamon and Wendy Stevens.
Going into the second half 20-0 up Becks were able to relax a little and both the scrum and lineout benefitted with hooker Vonnie Baxter taking quite a few scrums against the head as well as stealing some lineout from Beckenham. With Beckenham attempting some runs through the centre, Beccs defence was tested but held strong.
Using turnover ball wisely, scrum-half Steph Godsland was quick to cycle the ball out to the speedy backs who played intelligently to run in two more great tries, a second for winger Claire Hamon and a try for Beckie Edney who burst through the line to sprint in.
This was a good performance from Beccs Ladies who have learnt a lot from their tough match last week against Footscray. The only downside to the game was an injury to the Beckenham hooker to whom we wish a speedy recovery.
