2nd May 2004 - Beccs ladies lose 22-10 away to Ashford

Beccs Ladies travelled to Ashford today to take on Ashford Ladies in the last league match of the season. It was a hot and sunny day, a sure sign it was the last match of the season and the game turned out to be a fitting end with both teams giving it 100% and finishing the season with a good competitive match.

Ashford were quick to put Beccs under pressure with some good running lines from their fast backs. Beccs defence stood up to the challenge and were quick to put in the tackles and stop them. A good battle up front with both sets of forwards putting in some good scrums. Ashford were held up a couple of times from some scrums in the Beccs twenty-two but finally managed to cross the line to score.

Beccs fought back with some good play of their own but were pressed down into their half for quite a bit. Ashford took advantage and ran in another try which was converted. With Fiona Keith-Lucas keeping up the tradition of getting blood injury, Sally Gordon took to the field again at flank for her second match. Jay also came on at flank in the second half for her first match for Beccs and had a great game.

Beccs first score of the afternoon came from a great break from Wendy Stevens from some quick ball in Beccs own twenty-two. This try was a great example of why you should always support your backs - even if they are miles away up the pitch. Ashfords defence managed to catch Wendy who was tackled. Luckily Ashford gave away the penalty and some superb support play from scrum-half Steph Godsland saw her take a quick tap and go to score whilst Ashford were still arriving at the scene!

The second Beccs try came from some good hands through midfield to ship the ball out wide to Wendy Stevens who this time managed to evade the Ashford defence to score.

It was Ashfords day however with some fantastic work from their backs to score two more tries and convert one. Our congratulations go to them and thanks for a great game and your hospitality as always - we enjoyed the singing in the bath afterwards - but hey! don't give up the day jobs.. :)

Beccs ladies have now played all their matches for the 2003-2004 season! Congratulations to everyone on a really great year. To have been promoted two leagues and to be competing at the top of the league table all season is a great achievement. Here's to next year - onwards and upwards (or as Vonnie would say - 'pride and passion')
