9th Nov 2003 - Beccs lose 32-12 away to Aylesford in Div 3 SE-E.

Beccehamian Ladies suffered their first loss of the season 32-12 away to Aylesford Ladies this weekend in Division 3 SE-E. Despite playing well against a bigger pack and managing to score two tries out wide, the ladies were disappointed with their rather lacklustre performance this weekend.

On a dull dismal day, Aylesford were only able to field a team of 11 and so the match was played 10-aside. Beccs started off magnificently and took good advantage of the Aylesford kick-off and spun the ball out wide where debutante full-back Steph Kaleta ran it in to score under the posts. Unfortunately Beccs were unable to keep the pressure on and Aylesford were able to attack and with some good forward play broke through out wide to equal the scores.

With some good rucking and mauling from both sides the advantage was soon again with Beccs when Steph Kaleta broke through for a second score on the day and Alex Tyson converting.

The ladies worked well in the scrum with the front row working particularly hard with changing combinations of Vonnie Baxter, Steph Godsland, Michelle Pope, Sam Howe and Lara Fisher. A good return was also made today by Charlotte Boultbee returning after dislocating her shoulder last year and then suffering numerous related problems afterwards. Also playing her first match of the season was winger Stacie Baxter, also making a welcome return.

As Aylesford poured on the pressure, Beccs found it hard to hold their shape and the increasing Aylesford possession told and they began to get their noses in front with a couple of tries before half-time. Beccs re-grouped and began to use their subs to good effect but were unable to scramble back any points.

In the second half Beccs re-grouped and began to use their subs to good effect. Despite fighting back bravely they were never quite able to recover their rhythm and the spoils on the day went to Aylesford. However Beccehamians can take heart from this performance as until now the ladies best result against Aylesford was 60-0 in a friendly last season so it’s a measure of how far Beccs Ladies have travelled in that time that they can now compete on equal terms with Aylesford.

And the opportunity to get even is next weekend as Beccehamian Ladies next game is against Aylesford at home at Sparrow’s Den in Round 2 of the RFUW Challenge Cup on Sunday 16th November at 2pm. For details ring Alex on 07793-451091

The next league match is home to Thanet Wanderers on Sunday 30th November.
