4th April 2004 - Beccs win 20-54 away to Thanet Wanderers
Beccehamian Ladies won 20-54 this Sunday against a very depleated Thanet side. With only 6 ladies available by Sunday morning, Thanet were great sports and decided to still play the match, borrowing a number of Beccs ladies so that a game of rugby could go ahead. Beccs ladies policy of always trying to play a match held up and six Beccs ladies volunteered to don the blue and yellow shirts of Thanet.
With Lara Fisher, Jo Penny, Hannah Watts, and Kim Reiter playing for Thanet in the first half, the initial ten minutes were spent firmly in the Beccs twenty-two luckily with some strong defence preventing a score. Beccs ladies were able to maximise on a dropped ball and with quick hands from the backs got the ball out to winger Wendy Stevens who ran in her first of the day under the posts for Michelle Pope to convert.
From the restart Thanet came back strongly and it was only a matter of time before their forwards pushed over the line to score. Their second try of the day came from a series of five metre scrums back in the Beccs twenty-two with a couple held up before they finally scored.
Michelle Pope had a strong kicking game and from the Beccs twenty-two, a cross-field kick led to a Beccs lineout from which the ball was shipped back out to Wendy Stevens to run in her second of the day.
Some good play came from Jo Penny, playing her first game for Beccs ironically in a Thanet jersey. She became the Thanet jumper in the lineout and managed to cause Beccs some lineout problems. Also playing her first game for two months was Lara Fisher making a good solid comeback after a knee injury.
At the start of the second half, Yvonne Baxter and Natasha Williams swapped shirts to play for Thanet with Beccs welcoming back Kim Reiter and Hannah Watts. Beccs decided to change tack slightly and with some excellent communication kept the ball moving and out of contact.
Beccs began to disturb Thanet set-piece and began to driving Thanet off the ball for the first time in the scrum. Quick ball continued to make space outwide which Beccs made full use of with Wendy Stevens running in another three tries to make it five for her in this match.
Fly-half Carolyn Waugh managed two extremely good tries of her own and winger Claire Hamon, not to be outdone ran in one of her own. Seven conversions were made by prop Michelle Pope.
Moments of the match were seeing Yvonne and Jo in blue and yellow Thanet shirts attempting to sprint back to chase Claire and Wendy as they scored their tries..
A big thank you to Thanet for honouring this fixture and being great sports. We wish them the very best of luck for the rest of the season and look forward to playing their full team again in the future.
A big thank you to all the Beccs ladies that played today and especially those who volunteered to play for the opposition and for showing such great team spirit.
Editors Note - thanks to Kelly Malynn for writing a match report!
