29th Feb 2004 - Beccs ladies draw 17-17 at home to Beckenham

Beccehamian Ladies drew 17-17 against Beckenham this Sunday at Sparrow’s Den in a tightly contested Division 3 SE-E league match.

With flurries of snow coming down Beccs got off to a slow start and went into half-time 5-0 down. With lock Amanda Fenwick ill and leaving the field it was into the fray for Natasha Williams playing her first league match for Beccs today at second row and putting in a great game. Similarly Fiona Keith-Lucas was playing at prop for the first time in a league match for Beccs and also put in a very impressive effort against the large Beckenham pack.

After the break, hard work in the ruck gave quick ball out to centre Steph Kaleta who broke Beckenham defence for a long run down the wing to score. Great work from the Beccs forwards with a number of mauls won re-gained possession and another good move out through the backs saw new wing Claire Hamon run around the Beckenham back-line to score out wide - this makes it three tries in three matches from Claire - good work!

Beckenham fought back with a converted score but Beccs weren't throwing the towel in. Working at 110% they worked the ball up the field with winger Alaina Allen making a fantastic break in mid-field only to be brought back by the ref for a knock-on beforehand. It was soon back to centre Steph Kaleta however who skipped through with a side-step and sprinted home for her second try of the match. With Alex Tyson absent, kicking duties were taken over for the first time by hooker Michelle Pope who converted this try with a lovely kick.

With time running out Beckenham squeezed in a score in the corner through ex-Beccehamian Shannon Fisher which levelled the scores. At the final whistle the score was 17-17 and thus a draw despite being so keenly contested. Thanks to Beckenham for a very competitive match - but what happened afterwards? They are now competing closely with Sidcup for the team to leave Sparrow's Den the fastest after final whistle.

Beccehamians still remain in the top two in Division 3 SE-E. Considering they were promoted two leagues at the beginning of the year who would have thought they'd be here this side of Christmas? Keep up the good work girls!

Beccs ladies next game is home to Aylesford in Division 3 SE-E on Sunday 14th March.
