19th October 2003 - Beccs ladies win 17-10 home to Sidcup in Div 3 SE-E.
Beccehamian Ladies won their first home league game 17-10 in Division 3 SE-E against local team Sidcup at Sparrow’s Den this Sunday. On a rock hard pitch this was a very difficult game with neither side particularly having the upper hand. Sidcup arrived with 13 players and so under the new RFUW rules the game was played with 12-a-side, Beccehamians being able to use their extra players as rolling subs.
From kick-off play was fierce with some hard rucking to gain possession. It was Beccehamians who managed the first score with a break from Captain Alex Tyson from half-way to skirt the Sidcup defence and score under the posts. However Sidcup fought back and with some good possession kept Beccs in their own half for a sustained period before managing to break the defence to score. Neither Beccs nor Sidcup could add their conversions.
With the scores now level Beccs kicked off and chased back with determination. It became a battle of wills in midfield with the ball moving quickly from ruck and maul and with some turn-over in both directions. The break came for Beccehamians again through Alex Tyson when the ball was cleared quickly by the forwards allowing the backs to swing the ball out to Alex who completed another great run up-field to score.
After half-time Sidcup came back strongly and threw everything at Beccehamians. Both forward packs worked extremely hard and some big tackles were put in. Worth mentioning here was Steph Godsland making her debut at hooker for Beccehamians. She subbed on for Sam Howe who left the field, with Vonnie Baxter moving from hooker to prop. Sustained pressure from Beccehamians paid off and it was wing Wendy Stevens who eventually made the break with a darting run up the wing, dangerously close to the line to skirt the Sidcup defender before scoring under the posts. This try was converted by Alex Tyson.
Sidcup once again regrouped for the final quarter and some good work in the lineout saw them gain possession. With five minutes to go they gained some quick ball and catching Beccs on the hop were able to run a try through their backs to score. With the pressure well and truly on both sides were giving 100% for the win and some great defence from Beccs prevented Sidcup from breaking through for a further score. With time running out Beccs cleared their lines and at the final whistle the game went to Beccs 17-10.
The match on Sunday 2nd November at home to Beckenham has been called off and will be a home walkover as Beckeham are unable to field a side that weekend and the only available dates to rearrange are on our cup weekends or next week when we are at the Awards lunch.
Beccehamian Ladies next league match will therefore be away to Aylesford on Sunday 9th November.
Next weekend (26th Oct) some of Beccs ladies will be attending the RFUW Awards luncheon to celebrate winning Division 5 SE-E last season.
