1st September 2002 - Beccs beat Ashford 30-5 in the 1st Southern League match of the new season.

Beccehamian Ladies overcame Ashford this Sunday in the first game of the year to record their first win in the new season. Playing in the Southern League against the Division 4 side, Beccs were convincing winners running in 6 tries to a sole score from Ashford. This win gives Beccehamians the initial lead in the Southern League after the first week.

Still missing a couple of key players sidelined through injury, Beccehamians were fielding three players all making their debut for the team. From kick-off, the ball was quickly collected and shipped out through the backs where centre Hannah Tyson wasted no time in scoring the first try of the season and what has to be the fastest try of the season, touching down within the first minute of the match.

Disaster struck five minutes later when prop Sam Howe sustained an ankle injury and had to leave the field. Flanker Sarah Cobb took over as prop for the rest of the match. Beccs wasted no time in attempting to run the ball around the big Ashford forwards and new winger Alaina Allen showed her class by running in her first try for the club. Good work by the forwards saw a firm scrum against the big Ashford girls and hooker Gill Horn managed to take a number against the head.

Carolyn Waugh making her debut at fly-half gave some good distribution out through the backs, her pairing with scrum-half Charlotte Boultbee working well in getting quick ball away from the defending Ashford players. Alaina Allen on the wing again gave a great account of herself running in two more tries to complete a debut hat-trick and in the first half only!

In the second half, Ashford dug in deep and began to show good rucking and mauling skills which were hard to defend against. A concerted effort by Beccehamians managed to pin them in their own quarter for a good while. A foray into the Beccehamian half saw a break from Ashford which led to their only score of the match from their big, but fast Number 8.

Beccehamians re-grouped and tried a well-worked formula which saw Alaina Allen run in for her fourth try of the day. On a steaming hot day it was hard work for the girls and as both teams tired some good interplay between the forwards and backs saw full-back Caz Albery make a great run down the wing to score under the posts, another great debut performance.

A great first performance for Beccehamian Ladies and particularly satisfying after all the hard work over the summer improving fitness and skills levels.

Beccehamians next match is in the National League Division 5 SE Merit on Sunday 15th September at home to Old Caterhamians, Kick-off 2.30pm. This Sunday (8th September) it’s Beccehamian Ladies Open Day at Sparrow’s Den, 2pm start. All ladies welcome.
