16th March 2003 - Beccs win away 5-43 at Basildon in Division 5 SE
Beccs Ladies played Basildon this weekend in a quickly rearranged match which was scheduled to have taken place on 30th March when Beccs Ladies are on Tour in Dublin. With Beccs match against Rochford called off due to Rochford injuries and Basildon’s match against Guys going the same way, both teams were up for a match and so willing to play each other instead.
With the bright sunshine hardening the Basildon pitch, it meant that a good running game could be played and Beccs got off to a quick start with the ball spinning out wide from kick-off and centre Alex Tyson was able to go over for the first of the day, before stepping up to also convert her own try.
Playing intelligently on a rock hard pitch, Captain Lou led from the front with a great move through midfield to score out wide. Basildon re-grouped and began to put sections of good play together with some good scrummaging and good tackles in defence. A quick ball out from a ruck on half-way took Basildon by surprise and centre Lianne Wilson was able to make use of the overlap and sprint through a gap to score under the posts. Again this was converted by Alex Tyson.
Beccs now began to play well with some good moves put together and some runs being made up the wing by Carolyn Waugh and Charlotte Boultbee. A break by Lou Thomas saw her tackled metres from the line, but good support play enabled a quick pickup by lock Sarah Henson who dived over the line for another try.
Basildon kept their chins up and made good use of the set-piece to attack Beccs defence. Good line out disruption close to half-time saw a loose ball picked up by the Basildon full-back who made a quick break through a gap to sprint in over the line for a try.
After half time, Basildon were rejuvenated and came out determined to play some rugby. With some great runs and good skills they played with spirit but were unable to breach the Beccs defensive line. Some hard and extremely brave tackles were put in by both sides on the rock hard ground and Basildon defence worked extremely hard to keep out Beccehamians for a long period. However with some hard work in the maul from Beccs and good support in the ruck, Beccs forwards were able to advance up the field and it was lock Steph Wilson who barged over from the twenty-two for a try.
Just moments later, taking Basildon by surprise from kick-off, it was Alex Tyson who steamed through midfield and with some extremely ferocious hand-offs was able to score under the posts and again converted her own try.
To complete the day, the final try of the match was scored by lock Steph Wilson who benefited from the Basildon support advancing slowly to help a tackled player. Steph ran in and nicked the ball before sprinting in from the half-way line to score under the posts. The conversion by Alex Tyson was the final action in this fast running game.
Thanks go to Basildon for fitting us in and playing the match at such short notice and for giving us a great game - we wish them the best for the rest of the season.
Beccs have just two games left in the League this season and a win in either would give Beccs the top spot and win the League. Beccs next game is away to Slough Iceni in Division 5 SE on Sunday 23rd March, kick-off 2.00pm.
