3rd November 2002 - Beccs win 79-3 at home to Staines in Division 5 SE.

Beccehamian Ladies became league leaders in Division 5 SE this weekend after a massive win over the friendly Staines team at Sparrow’s Den.

In this fast running game of rugby, Staines were denied possession and Beccehamians were quick to run in their first try through Alex Tyson from a stolen lineout ball in the twenty-two. Now on a roll, the back-line were able to practise some of their training moves and within ten minutes Alex Tyson had crossed the line two more times, crashing through tackles with her trademark hand-off to claim a quick hatrick.

Staines were able to put some pressure on through the scrums but were never able to break the Beccehamian defence and ball was quickly turned around in the loose. Great rucking from the forwards saw quick turn-around of the ball with scrum-half Louise Thomas and fly-half Carolyn Waugh giving quick distribution out to the backs. A great move up the wing saw Charlotte Boultbee cross the line for her second of the season. Taking over kicking duty for the first time, the try was converted by hooker Jane Richmond.

Further tries in the first half quickly followed with another great midfield move which saw the ball passed out to the other wing for Alaina Allen to gallop through to touchdown by the posts. Centre Lianne Wilson was next with a great direct run through midfield to score. The half was complete with a fourth for Alex Tyson who ran from deep showing another tasty hand-off to score under the posts. All these tries were again converted by Jane Richmond.

The second half saw Staines begin to tire but they put a great fight and kept their chins up throughout. Full-back Hannah Tyson making some great runs throughout was soon over the line for her first of the match, closely followed again by sister Alex who ran in for her 5th of the day. Not to be out-done, Hannah was soon back over the line after fielding a defensive kick from the Staines fly-half and running in from deep.

With the match now won, Beccehamians brought on some substitutions with lock Lucy Chitty making a fine debut for the club. Minutes later Hannah Tyson was weaving her way through midfield again to complete her hatrick- certainly a good day for the Tyson sisters! Substitute winger Stacie Baxter had a great run through midfield and was denied her first try by a last-minute tackle to be stopped inches from the line.

The final tries of the match came from lock Sarah Henson who galloped over from short-range, and the first of the season for Captain Louise Thomas who made a darting run down the wing to score in the corner. Again conversions were taken by Jane Richmond who had a stormer with the boot, converting 70% of all kicks attempted.

This result takes Beccehamians to top of Division 5 SE, admittedly on points difference and the ladies now have the task of staying there!

Beccehamians next match is in the second round of the National Cup at HOME to Division 2 Camberley on Sunday 17th November, Kick-off 2.30pm.
