6th October 2002 - Beccs win against Sidcup 12-0 in the National Cup.
Beccehamian Ladies rugby team were celebrating last night after beating Division 3 team Sidcup 12-0 in the RFU-W National Cup at Sparrow’s Den.
Taking part in the National Cup for the first time and being drawn against a team two leagues above them, Beccs were fired up and played a blinder with a very determined performance. Initial control by Sidcup saw them run the ball and quickly recycle possession at the breakdown, however Beccs dug in deep and were ready for the turnover ball.
Taking Sidcup by surprise, Beccehamians scrum was solid and won many of the scrums through pushing the Sidcup pack off the ball. Despite missing injured hooker Gill Horn, replacement Tracy Roper filled in admirably and Beccehamians were able to dominate the scrum situation.
With ball-handling skills improving all the time, Beccehamians were able to begin to run the ball and some good back-line play got the ball quickly out to winger Alaina Allen who was unlucky not to break through for a try. However Beccs did not have long to wait when interplay between Alaina Allen and full-back Wendy Stevens saw Stevens break through the Sidcup line and finish at speed over the line for the first try.
With Sidcup coming back at Beccehamians in a determined fashion, some solid tackles had to be made. Beccs defence stood up to the challenge and managed to win back possession. Another break out on the wings saw Wendy Stevens go over for her second of the day, the try being converted by centre Alex Tyson.
With the bit firmly between their teeth, Beccehamians were determined not to let Sidcup back into the game and despite an onslaught by the Sidcup pack and lively half-backs, Beccs line held firm. With Sidcup coming within metres of the try line, some thunderous tackles were put in to deny them a score. A great effort, going into half-time 12-0 to Beccehamians.
With Sidcup suffering badly through the loss of three players through knocks and injuries, at the start of the second-half Sidcup decided to concede the match. Beccehamians were therefore sure winners on the day 12-0 and continue in the cup through to Round 2!
Beccehamians next match is in the Southern League on Sunday 13th October away to Beckenham, Kick-off 2.30pm.
