17th November 2002 - Beccs lose 29-3 to Division 2 Camberley in the National Cup

Beccehamian Ladies lost 29-3 at home to Division 2 side Camberley this Sunday in the last 16 of the National Cup.

It was tough going for Beccs against the well-skilled higher division side, however the ladies played with courage and determination throughout.

Camberley were quick to take advantage with some well-drilled back moves that took Beccehamians by surprise. Despite defending well, Beccs were unable to stop two early tries from Camberley. Not deterred, Beccehamians dug in deep and began to compete well in the ruck situation.

Up against an experienced forward pack, it was hard work for Beccehamians to compete in the scrum. Playing with a slightly different pack, Lucy Chitty made her full debut this weekend in at 2nd row with lock Sarah Henson covering Number 8. A good effort from the girls saw the scrum holding firm although they were unable to push Camberley back to take any against the head.

Having conceded the early tries, Beccehamians were determined to prevent too many more from crossing the line. With a good defensive effort the ladies managed to put in the tackles and win back some possession. However Camberley had the upper hand and went into half-time 24-0 up.

In the second-half Beccehamians went out with their heads up determined to play their own game in this half. With much improved forward play the backs were able to run the ball around more with a couple of very good breaks. Camberley responded and attacked back severely testing the Beccehamian defence. With low hard tackles Beccs pushed the Camberley attackers back and held the ball up over the line at least twice.

It was a fantastic effort in defence and Beccs played as a complete team supporting and helping each other throughout. For the last 20 minutes they were reduced to 14 players when lock Amanda Fenwick received a hefty knock to her jaw and had to leave the field. Still Beccehamians held tight and with 5 minutes left they were further reduced to 13 when Sarah Henson also had to leave the field through an calf injury.

Beccs only score came early in the half with a penalty kick which was taken by hooker Jane Richmond. Camberley managed a single try through their wingers which brought the second half score to 5-3.

This is a fantastic result against a well-established Division 2 side and goes to show just how far Beccehamian Ladies have progressed in this first season competing in the National League structure. Playing with confidence and determination, Beccehamians have a great team spirit and are obviously fully enjoying their rugby. They will take a lot from this match, learning a great deal from playing the higher league opposition.

This result takes Beccehamians out of the National Cup, however they now take part in the National Shield Quarter-Finals, ties to be played on Sunday 15th December.

Beccehamians next match is away to Rochford Hundred in Division 5 SE on Sunday 24th November, Kick-off 2.15pm.
