20th October 2002 - Beccs Ladies beat Guys & St. Thomas 34-5 in Division 5 SE.

Beccehamian Ladies continued their great League form with a win 34-5 away to Guys & St. Thomas on Sunday in Division 5 SE

Despite rainy conditions making the ball quite slippery, it was a fast and furious match. Determined play from the forwards secured the ball and Beccehamians were first to settle and began to spin the ball out wide to the wings. This soon paid off with centre Alex Tyson barrelling her way through to score the first try of the match.

Guys put up a good battle in the forwards and were initially able to hold the Beccs scrum, fielding Jane Richmond at prop for the first time along with a new arrangement of the back-row. However it was Beccs who took the advantage and shipped fast ball out to winger Wendy Stevens who showed her quick turn of pace to run in the second try. A short while later Captain Lou took a quick tap penalty and again the ball was passed quickly along the backs making fantastic use of the whole width of the pitch. This time it was winger Alaina Allen who tore past the Guys defence to score. This score was converted by Alex Tyson.

With half-time looming, Beccehamians were hungry for more. With the Beccs scrum now back to normal and competing well against the Guys forwards, more ball was secured from the forward play allowing greater freedom for the backs to run. A final try in this half was scored by centre Alex Tyson taking Beccs ladies into the interval 22-0 up.

Guys took the half-time opportunity to reorganise themselves and came back after the break as determined as ever. Playing the ball well through their forwards they managed to compete well in the maul winning turnover ball. Some great tackling from Beccs however kept the defensive line solid and Guys were unable to break through and capitalise despite having a penalty on the 5 metre line at one point.

Beccehamians once more took the advantage after staging some quick line-outs and passing the ball once more out to winger Wendy Stevens who ran in for her second of the day, once more converted by Alex Tyson. Growing in confidence Beccs were able to pass the ball about more and it was not long before Wendy Stevens was once more galloping in to claim her first hatrick.

With the match secured Beccs brought on their subs with Charlotte Boultbee coming on at scrum-half for Louise Thomas, Karen Benham replacing Hannah Tyson at full-back and Stacie Baxter taking over from Wendy Stevens on the wing. With the team still getting organised Guys were able to take the advantage with an interception which was run in by the scrum-half.

Still it was a great performance by both teams and this 6-try fest takes Beccehamian ladies to second in the League

Beccehamians next match is in Division 5 SE HOME to Staines on Sunday 3rd November, Kick-off 2.30pm.
