24th November 2002 - Beccs win 52-0 away at Rochford Hundred in Division 5 SE

Beccehamian Ladies won 52-0 this weekend away to Rochford Hundred keeping their spot at the top of the Division 5 SE league table.

It was a scrappy match on a very wet pitch which led to quite a few mistakes and handling errors throughout the match. Rochford started strongly but were unable to make any progress down the pitch. Beccehamians drove through their forwards and were rewarded with a first Beccs try for prop Tracey Roper.

Beccehamians started slowly but began to secure better ball as the match went on and managed some good runs through the backs. Missing both flying wingers Alaina Allen and Wendy Stevens, along with full-back Hannah Tyson, the backs performed extremely well pulling together to play some good moves and show some good turns of speed.

Beccs scrum performed well, hooker Gillian Horn making a welcome return to the field after suffering a broken nose early on in the season. Back to form she managed to take many Rochford scrums against the head. From some close-range play and some good rucking, lock Amanda Fenwick was able to cross the line for her first try for the club. Prop Kira Heaton soon followed in one corner and 5 minutes later finished a magnificent run down the wing to score in the other.

The half finished 25-0 after centre Alex Tyson bashed her way through the Rochford defence to score.

Beccehamians woke up a little more in the second half and began to cut down on the errors and compete strongly through the forwards. This gave the backs a good base to begin some running moves. Sisters Lianne and Steph Wilson took advantage of space and showing some great bursts of speed ran in a try apiece from deep on the field.

Determined play from Rochford saw them put together a few moves of their own and credit to their tackling which was extremely good on the day and stopped quite a few Beccs attacks from getting through. Scrum-half Charlotte Boultbee was a live-wire in the second-half, keeping Rochford on their toes and crossing the line to score after a quick tap penalty. Final try of the match came from flanker Sarah Henson who caught a quick ball from Boultbee from a ruck and ran through a Rochford tackle to score. Two tries were converted by Alex Tyson.

It was a scrappy match from Beccehamians who will be slightly disappointed by the number of mistakes and missed opportunities during the match. However, regardless of this it was a great result away from home which keeps Beccehamians at the top of the table.

Beccehamians next match is home to Heathfield in the friendly Southern League on Sunday 1st December, Kick-off 2.15pm.
