22nd September 2002 - Beccs lose out to Aylesford 60-0 in the friendly Southern League.

Beccehamian Ladies suffered their first defeat of the season away to Division 4 side Aylesford in the friendly Southern League on Sunday. Last years run-away Division 5 SE champions continued their run from last year with a 60-0 victory, which means they are now unbeaten in both the National and Friendly Leagues for over a year. However it was still an improvement for Beccs on last years corresponding match.

With a number of key players still in the physio room - namely Captain Lou Thomas (knee), Vice Captain Gill Horn (nose), Kelly Malynn (broken leg) and Sam Howe (broken ankle), this was always going to be a difficult match. Lock Sarah Henson and prop Kira Heaton were also unavailable which didn't help matters against the higher division team.

It was a difficult game, Aylesford are a well-drilled team with a tight and hard-working pack. However good rucking from Beccs saw some clean ball secured on many occasions which led to some good runs by the Beccehamian backs. Aylesford defence proved to be too strong and Beccs were unable to break the line, despite coming close numerous occasions.

Centre Alex Tyson made an excellent run which nearly led to a try, however was just pushed over the line by Aylesford. Good tacking from full back Karen Benham and outside centre Wendy Stevens kept the try count down with two balls being held up over the line.

With a massive re-organisation of the scrum, it was liable to creak slightly. Winger Lara Fisher stepped in to play at prop with Jo Henson moving over to hooker for the first time. A massive effort from the girls with many playing out of position.

To sum up this game was rather a mis-match on a day when Beccs were not at full strength. Still a great learning opportunity for Beccehamians and satisfying to record a better result against Aylesford than both meetings last season.

Beccehamians next match is in Division 5 SE Merit on Sunday 29th September away to Basingstoke, Kick-off 2.30pm.
