8th December 2002 - Beccs win 54-0 at home to Basildon Ladies in Division 5 SE
Beccehamian Ladies stayed top of Division 5 SE this weekend after a 10-try win over Basildon Ladies at Sparrow’s Den.
On a wet and sticky ground, Beccs ladies put together some good moves to run around the Basildon defence and score a massive 10 tries. Basildon were only able to gather a team of 10 to travel to West Wickham so the match was played 10-aside with uncontested scrums. Beccehamians took no time in getting started with some good runs through midfield, being just held up on a number of occasions by the Basildon defence.
Captain Louise Thomas led the way playing at scrum-half and enabled quick ball out to through the backs. First try was through prop Kira Heaton who made one of her normal charging runs to break through the opposition defence. Soon after she was followed by Captain Lou who showed good supporting skills by following Kira on a run and continuing the move with the offloaded ball to touch down over the line.
Basildon lost a player shortly into the first half who had to retire from the game. Beccehamian player Jo Henson volunteered to play for the opposition on this occasion to keep the numbers level and had a great game starting at centre(!) and later returning to her normal position of prop.
Beginning to enjoy themselves Beccehamians began to throw the ball about and put together some good passages of play. Fly-half Carolyn Waugh tested the opposition defence throughout the half with some good interplay with winger Alaina Allen. Alaina was next to go over with a great sprint along the wing to score in the far corner. Soon after, lock Sarah Henson made a break from half-way and sprinted through the defence to touch-down under the posts. Finishing the half came a great break from Hannah Tyson who showed some fancy footwork to score again under the posts.
In the second half it was all change as Beccehamians brought on the players who were standing on the touch-line. Charlotte Boultbee came on as scrum-half with Captain Lou moving to fly-half and Carolyn Waugh leaving with field. Alex Tyson was replaced by Karen Benham, Hannah Tyson by Wendy Stevens and Alaina Allen by Stacie Baxter. Lock Amanda Fenwick came into prop in place of flanker Lara Fisher, who had been filling in at this position.
Great tackling from forwards Steph Wilson and Kira Heaton secured fast ball in the second half which was flicked out by the half-backs to the wings. Centre Wendy Stevens had a fantastic afternoon managing to run in a hatrick of extremely fast tries along the wing. Sarah Henson managed her second picking-up from a ruck to take advantage of the blind-side. Final try of the match was scored by centre Karen Benham who scored her first try for the team and also managed two conversions to put the icing on the cake of a great game.
Beccehamians therefore go into the Christmas period at the top of the League with a two-point gap and a great points difference. However Slough still have a game in hand and could easily catch Beccs Ladies – especially as they are our next match!
Thanks go to Basildon for playing the match against us, especially having to travel away the week before Christmas. It was a good performance from an extremely friendly bunch and we enjoyed both the singing and the club-house banter. (Can someone come back please to clean the stairs?!)
Please note: There were no broken legs or broken noses during this match..
Beccehamians next match is AWAY to Slough Iceni in Division 5 SE on Sunday 12th January, Kick-off 2.15pm.
