19th January 2003 - Beccs win 32-7 away to Old Cats in Division 5 SE
Beccehamian Ladies got 2003 off to a great start this weekend with a victory away to Old Caterhamians to keep them top of Div 5 SE.
With Old Cats currently lying in 2nd position in the league this was always going to be a well-contested fixture. The game was played 14-aside as Old Cats were missing a few players through injury and on an extremely wet and soggy pitch, it was hard going and a very physical and tiring game for all concerned.
It was Beccs ladies who put in the first attack with some nice handling and through determined tackling managed to keep Old Cats pinned into their own half for some time. Great rucking from Old Cats saw them gain possession and set up good running lines. It was Beccs however who managed a first score with disruption to an Old Cats lineout within their twenty-two. Forced errors saw the ball fall through into Beccs hands and lock Amanda Fenwick was able to barge through and despite being tackled by two players managed to get the ball down for a try.
The game continued with some intelligent team play from both sides. An injury to an Old Cat meant Beccs had to further reduce to play 13-aside. With more space available Beccs grabbed a second try with some slick handling through the backs to winger Wendy Stevens who turned on the speed to sprint through to score.
The second half began the way the first had ended with both teams playing at top speed and with some fearsome tackles coming in from both sides. Old Cats showed their class with some good set-moves, however Beccs defence held firm and soon Wendy Stevens was able to run outside the Old Cats defence down the wing to score in the far corner. The fourth was scored soon after from the Old Cats twenty-two when lock Sarah Henson picked up the ball from the back of a ruck and ran through to score.
Old Cats fought back with some great rucking, securing the possession from Beccs Ladies. A move through midfield saw them break through to score under the post, along with the conversion.
An unfortunate injury to scrum-half Charlotte Boultbee later turned out to be a dislocated shoulder, however Beccs ladies with 19 ladies available, were able to make use of their subs. Winger Alaina Allen made some impressive runs throughout the match, threatening to break through the Old Cats defence on many occasions. Late in the second half her chance came with a Beccs scrum in the Old Cats twenty-two which gave her the quick ball she needed and her speed taking her through to score.
The final score of the match came from open play on the half-way line where the ball had been bogged down for a while. Some hard work in the maul saw a steal from prop Jo Henson and fast transfer out to centre Lianne Wilson who sprinted in from half-way to score under the post. The final try was converted by Alex Tyson to end the match 32-7 to Beccehamian Ladies. A very well fought match played with determination and good spirit by both sides. We wish Old Cats all the best for the rest of the season.
Beccehamians next match is AWAY to Ashford in a friendly Southern League match on Sunday 26th January, Kick-off 2.00pm.
