9th Feb 2003 - Beccs win 48-5 at home to Basingstoke in Division 5 SE
On an extremely wet and rainy day, Beccs Ladies took on Basingstoke Sirens at home at Sparrow’s Den in the National League. With the visitors arriving without a full squad, the match was played ten-aside to ensure equal numbers which meant lots of space to run around in. Beccs were quick to make use of this with some good hands and running lines which saw winger Wendy Stevens cross the line within minutes of kick-off.
Basingstoke tightened up their defence putting in some good tackles, however Beccehamians fresh out of the blocks were eager to run the ball around the Basingstoke forwards and quick ball out from a ruck saw centre Alex Tyson run up the wing to score the try, as well as kicking a successful conversion.
Basingstoke began to play the ball more in their forwards but good technique in the scrum saw Beccs hold their own against the big Basingstoke forwards. Another quick move saw the ball shipped out to the back line and Wendy Stevens ran some intelligent lines to go under for her second, again converted by Alex Tyson.
Continued pressure from Beccs saw some good rucking from the forwards to secure the ball. Solid in defence they prevented Basingstoke from making any ground and once more some quick hands saw fly-half Carolyn Waugh score out on the wing, running in her first try for Beccehamians. The try was again converted by Alex Tyson.
Half-time saw some changes with subs comings on, Beccs having a full team once more for this game. Karen Benham replaced Steph Wilson at lock with Lucy Chitty having come on minutes earlier for lock Amanda Fenwick. Hannah Tyson replaced sister Alex out in the backs.
In the second half Basingstoke changed tactics and began to keep the ball close in the forwards attempting the maul on every occasion. Beccs defended well but under pressure for a period unsettled slightly with the substitutions at half-time. Basingstoke took good advantage of this and put together a strong effort in the forwards enabling them to go over for a push-over try. Undeterred Beccs continued to secure the ball to play their own running game and a smart move out to winger Wendy Stevens saw her sprint in from the half-way line to celebrate a hatrick on the day.
With substitute winger Alaina Allen replacing Wendy Stevens, Beccs re-grouped for the attack. With the big Basingstoke forwards now tiring there was plenty of room for Beccs backs to have some fun and first to take advantage was fly-half Carolyn Waugh who finished off a mid-field move to run in from half-way - proving that just like buses, no sooner do you get your first try than along comes the second. This was converted by Karen Benham.
The afternoon was complete with two classy tries from winger Alaina Allen who showed her tremendous change of pace through midfield to score twice under the post. This 8-try feast saw the final score finish 48-5 to Beccs. Thanks go to Basingstoke for a great match and for playing with determination and spirit throughout despite having problems with injuries and resources at present and we wish them all the very best for the rest of the season.
