13th October 2002 - Beccs hold Beckenham to a 5-5 draw in the Southern League.

Beccehamian ladies continued their successful season with another higher league result to add to their collection, holding Division 4 Beckenham to a 5-5 draw at Balmoral Avenue.

Both sides were extremely fired up for this Southern League encounter which was the first between Beccehamians and the very newly established Beckenham ladies side.

It was a very fast-moving game despite the pouring rain which dogged most of the match. Beckenham were fielding 5 ladies who played for Beccehamians last season and it is a tribute to Beccs off-season recruiting that they have replaced these players with a great number of new ladies, all of whom are now playing for Beccs with great spirit and skill.

Beccehamians took the kick-off and it was into the fray with some determined play from both sides. Some good tackling from Beccs kept the Beckenham back-line from breaking through and forced mistakes led to the breakdown. Beccehamians scrum was strong all day and with some scrums collapsing, managed to take a great deal against the head. Despite some very determined play and good tackling, neither side was able to take the advantage and much of the first-half was played in the middle section of the pitch.

After half-time, Beckenham kicked off and were very quick to get the ball out to their winger who took Beccs by surprise for a break-away try. Disappointed but not perturbed, Beccs dug in deep and rucked their way into the possession and began to efficiently recycle the ball. Working their way up the field, Beccehamians began a determined attack. Taking a Beckenham scrum against the head, Beccs advanced on the line and setting up a ruck close to the line, lock Sarah Henson was able to cross the line to score.

Despite a massive effort from both teams, there were no further scores, but a great result for Beccehamians to draw away from home and they look forward to the re-match.

Beccehamians next match is in division 5 SE away to Guys & St. Thomas on Sunday 20th October, Kick-off 2.30pm.
