23rd Feb 2003 - Beccs win 39-14 at home to Guys & S.t Thomas in Div 5 SE

On an unusually sunny and warm day, Beccs Ladies took on Guys & St. Thomas at home at Sparrow’s Den in the National League. With the ground firmer than the mud of the last few weeks a quicker match could take place with more scope and space for a good running game.

Beccehamians started quite strongly with some good running through the backs and a break by centre Alex Tyson through midfield led to some clearing-up work by scrum-half Lou Thomas and out to winger Charlotte Boultbee who ran in and under the posts for the first score of the day. The try was converted by Alex Tyson.

Making a very welcome return to the field today was prop Sam Howe, playing in her first match after breaking an ankle in the warm-up match at the start of the season. Holding firm in the scrum and getting involved well in the forward play she had a good half-an hour before coming off to be replaced by Sarah Cobb.

With some messy play from both sides the ball was loose for a couple of minutes with quite a few turn-overs. A massive kick from Alex Tyson in her 22 saw the ball fly up into the Guys half and speedy winger Alaina Allen gave chase. Tackled metres from the line she managed to stand in the tackle and offload to centre Carolyn Waugh who galloped over the line for Beccs second, the try not converted.

With Alex Tyson coming off after twisting an ankle, it was time for Eve De Maertelaere to come onto the pitch for her debut appearance. Making some good use of the space on the wing Eve had a good first game, despite getting a rather hard tackle within a minute of getting on the pitch!

Guys began to build up the pressure and working extremely hard through their forwards worked steadily up the field. Making use of some quick rucking they were able to charge over the line for their first score which was converted by their fly-half. Again making good use of possession and working well from the line-out Guys were able to make progress up the field. Beccs held out and began to fight back however just before half-time Guys were able to cross the line again and convert to go into half-time 12-14 ahead.

After a good half-time pep talk, Beccs came out with their heads back on and began to attack with more determination and fire. Another debutante for Beccs today was Swedish fly-half Cat Blanc who got to know of us during her tour of England last season with the Swedish U20 side. Showing some handy skills and extremely good hands, Cat made sensible use of the ball with good distribution out to midfield. But it was a great break by Cat in the Guys 22 which saw her break clear and cross the line to score her first try for the club and take Beccs into the lead at 19-14.

Beginning to think more about ball distribution and keeping ball possession, Beccs were soon moving well and began to secure more possession through the forwards though the ruck, line-out and with hooker Gill Horn taking quite a few scrums against the head. Controlling the game through the forwards and beginning to play their own game it was time for Beccs to use speedy Alaina Allen out on the wing to full advantage and credit to her for taking some great catches at speed and running around the Guys defence time and again to score four great tries in the second half of the game (and even managing to convert one herself!) The game therefore ended 39-14 to Beccs with Guys failing to score in the second half.

Thanks go to Guys & St. Thomas for providing a good competitive game, they are certainly a very improved team this year, and also for shocking Beccs by going into half-time in the lead. But well done to the Beccs girls for showing some good fight in getting back into the game and then taking it back.

Beccehamians next match is AWAY to Staines in Division 5 SE on Sunday 9th March, Kick-off 2.00pm.
