6th April 2003 - Beccs win 48-0 at home to Slough Iceni in Division 5 SE

Beccehamian Ladies finished their season on a high this weekend with a 48-0 win at home against Slough Iceni, keeping their unbeaten League record at home intact.

With the League already won, Beccs ladies could relax and play some running rugby on the hard ground. With both Slough and Beccs missing a few key players it was a different line up to two weeks ago but still a keenly fought match. Starting off well, Beccs worked the ball out through the backs and first try of the match came from scrum-half Louise Thomas who worked a good line through the Slough defence and ran wide to score.

Playing some good forward work to enable quick distribution of ball, Beccs were able to run the ball around more and the second try of the match came from winger Wendy Stevens who ran wide and sprinted through under the posts to score. The try was converted by Alex Tyson.

Charlotte Boutlbee and Carolyn Waugh both had fantastic matches playing out of position as flankers, their more normal positions being in the backs. Tackling was spot-on with big hits being made and no tackles missed. This meant that Slough were unable to make too much progress up the field and some good mauling from Lara Fisher saw Slough ball held up a number of times.

Beccs were soon rewarded again with a blast through midfield from centre Alex Tyson who did a couple of hand-offs before scoring under the posts, again converting her own try.

After half-time, Beccs came out again for the final half of League rugby this season and were determined to finish on a high. Great running through the backs with much improved handling to the previous Slough meeting saw fly-half Cat Blanc go in for her first of the day.

Eve De Maertelaere played full-back for the first time and put into practise some of her newly learnt kicking and catching skills. Slough attempted a couple of kick-throughs but were unable to break through the Beccs defence. With Sarah Henson winning most of the Slough lineout, Beccs were able to claim much possession and began to run the ball around well. A second try for Wendy Stevens soon came with another fast sprint and side-step around the defence and not to be out-done, winger Alaina Allen had a great run down the field with a fierce hand-off to break through and score. This was again converted by Alex Tyson.

The forwards worked hard and nearly scored a try of their own by rumbling the ball forward in the maul. Karen Benham, playing out of position at lock had a fantastic run through the field clearing up in Beccs twenty-two and then running through the Slough line before getting held up. However it was a day for the backs and Cat Blanc was able to get a quick rip of the ball to dive over the line for her second. The final try of the season went to centre Alex Tyson who took advantage of some space to run around the Slough defence and score and convert the try. The final score was 48-0 to Beccs Ladies who finish the season defending their unbeaten home record.

Thanks to Slough for a great match, more keenly contested than the score-line suggests! And we wish them all the very best and hope to meet them again next year - have a great time in Kilkenny!
