29th September 2002 - Beccs lose 38-5 away to Basingstoke in Div 5 SE
Beccehamian Ladies suffered their first League defeat this weekend away to Basingstoke Ladies team – the Sirens 38-5. Up against a massive Basingstoke pack, Beccs were unable to respond to the challenge and came away second best in this encounter.
Still with a number of key players in the physio room - Gill Horn, Kelly Malynn, Jane Richmond and Sam Howe plus another four key players unavailable, namely Sarah Cobb, Tracey Roper, Amanda Fenwick and Wendy Stevens, this meant a weakened Beccs pack had to face the big Basingstoke forwards.
The hardest part of this game was securing possession as Basingstoke protected the ball well. Some good tackling was seen by Beccs but it was hard work to keep the work-rate going against such big girls throughout the match. It was Basingstoke who scored first through an early penalty and then a quick try.
Beccehamians responded well and secured some possession and managed to jinx the ball out through the backs. Captain Lou Thomas made a welcome return this weekend playing her first match of the season after being side-lined so far with a knee injury. With some possession won, the ball made its way out to centre Alex Tyson who very nearly made it to the line before off-loading to sister Hannah Tyson who crossed the line to score.
With another re-organisation of the scrum for this match, wing Lara Fisher took over hooking duty with debutant Lisa Taylor having a good first game as lock. Stephanie Austin also made a welcome return to the game after an extended absence and had a lively game at Number 8 with some good tackles being put in. The scrum was difficult against such a big pack, however Beccs did manage to put up a good effort with some good technique.
The half-time score was close with Basingstoke two scores ahead, however the Basingstoke girls poured on the pressure in the second half with some determined play from their forwards interchanging with confident running through their backs. Beccehamians dug deep but didn’t quite have enough in reserve and Basingstoke were able to dominate. A disappointing result for the Beccehamian girls on a day when a full strong team could not be fielded. Still a good effort from those who did play with as always lots to work on.
Beccehamians next match is in the RFU-W National Cup on Sunday 6th October home to local Division 3 side, Sidcup. Kick -off 2.30pm.
